After the wedding, we’ll head up to the Oriental Club in Stratford Place, which is set back from Oxford Street, just opposite Bond Street tube station. Best of all, it’s only a four minute walk from the Cathedral!
The Oriental is a members’ club housed in the beautifully palladian Stratford House, a stately home originally built for the Earl of Aldborough in the 1770s, though the Club itself only moved in in 1962. It was founded in Grosvenor Street in 1824 by returning officers and officials from British India and, to this day, serves a selection of curries every day. Many of its modern members are Eastern businessmen and dignitaries, and women have been admitted as members since 2010.
We have hired the outdoor club terrace for the wedding breakfast, as well as the adjoining library. The club terrace is covered by a ‘shamiana’ canopy — so we don’t have to worry about any rain! The library is a beautiful example of 1770s high classical décor and contains an imposing portrait of the Duke of Wellington. The Iron Duke served as Honorary President of the club from its founding in 1824 until his death in 1852 — the committee never appointed another.
